Early Voting is Underway!

Dear ,

Polls are open for the 2024 General Election! President, our representation in Congress and in the Tennessee General Assembly, as well as our local transportation referendum (more on that below) are all on the ballot. Early voting runs through October 31st, and you can vote at any location during early voting. Please see the locations and schedule below. The South Inglewood Community Center and the Metro Office Building (the old Howard building) are the locations closest to us.

Election Day is November 5, and you can find your precinct for voting that day here.

Make a plan, and vote! You don’t need to hear from me how critical this is.

The Transportation Improvement Program

We have a chance in November (actually: now, today—vote early!) to finally start tackling one of our most important local issues: transportation. We have underinvested in transportation for decades: that’s why we sit so much in traffic, and have so few sidewalks. We have a rare chance to do something significant about it. This plan will let us build a flexible, long-term system to decongest our roads, let more of us walk to school or the grocery, and safely take the bus home from a late shift at work.

Check out the plan document. You can find the District 6-specific improvements here (starting at page 16). This interactive map of the county is a useful way to envision the potential. The Metro resources page for the whole plan and related info is here.

If you have any questions, misgivings, or perspectives, please reach out to me.

Please go all the way down your ballot and vote “For” the Transportation Improvement Program!

Hotel proposed for South 5th Street

An applicant has proposed to build a hotel at 751 South 5th Street, which would require a rezoning. Because this location is so close to the Cayce Homes community, I am especially interested in how it would benefit that community, and how it aligns with the goals of Envision Cayce.

The application has been filed before the Planning Commission for its October 24th meeting (4:00pm at the Howard Office Building). The commission will hear any public comment at that meeting, and you can also write to the Planning Commission at: [email protected].

I have not yet decided whether to support moving this project forward for consideration by the Metro Council. That will depend, for me, on community feedback and whether the project will bring meaningful benefits to the Cayce community. The applicant will present its plans at a community meeting on October 29th at 5:30pm at 620 Dew Street, and I will await that discussion. (I will let everyone know one way or the other, but if the proposal does move forward to the Metro Council, there would also be a public hearing there, so stay tuned for that). Thank you to MDHA for hosting this meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend, and if you can’t make it, reaching out to me with thoughts and questions is just as good.

Hope to see you soon. Yours in service, Clay
