District 6 Newsletter 1/4/2024

Dear ,

Happy New Year! There’s a lot going on around Nashville in 2024, so here are some quick notes off the bat, with much more to follow. If your friends or neighbors are interested in these updates, please let them know they can sign up at claycapp.com.

We had a huge and enthusiastic turnout at the first community meeting to discuss the rehabilitation of this gorgeous building at the entrance to Shelby Park. Please join us for our second meeting to see the proposal and share your thoughts:

Thursday 1/18/24, from 4:30-6:30pm, at the Kirkpatrick Community center — drop in anytime!

I am planning to carry this proposal to the Council and the Parks Board for approval in the coming weeks, and I would love to hear your feedback, so we can make it the best it can be, before I do.

Three traffic calming projects in our district!

Three traffic calming projects are moving forward in our neighborhoods. (Truth: they were funded by the previous council, but I’m excited to carry them forward!) The next step for them all is a virtual community meeting, which, if you are interested, please join:

For 14th and Greenwood: 1/8, 5:30pm. Link to join here.

For South 11th and South 16th Streets (two different projects in a combined meeting): 1/11, 7pm. Link here.

There will be another round of traffic calming applications coming up in March. I will keep everyone posted here, and I will keep pushing to get these projects funded!

My Resolution on Public Education funding

As you know, supporting our public schools is critical for me, so I wrote a resolution opposing the alarming proposal pending at the state level to defund our schools by rejecting federal education funding. I was proud to sponsor it, and am proud of the Council for passing it without opposition. WPLN helpfully covered the issue, too.

As you also know, the General Assembly comes back to town, and back into session, on January 9th. We all need to keep an eye on any moves they make to defund our schools, including through a voucher program, which has also been proposed. Expect action from the Council soon, opposing that proposal on behalf of our city, too, and please be ready to make your voices heard at the state level on these fundamental issues.

Breaking Ground on Affordable Housing

One highlight of last month was helping to break ground on Park Point East, which is part of the Cayce Transformation. It will include 203 affordable units, and 115 of those will be for current Cayce residents! I enjoyed saying a quick word and celebrating the construction of this affordable housing. More to come!

Hope to see you soon. Yours in service, Clay
