District 6 Newsletter 5/25/24
Dear ,
Greetings for Memorial Day weekend, as we honor our fallen service members, and close out the school year. Congratulations to all of our students, and great thanks to all of their teachers and school staff. Here’s to summer! Hug a cicada while you still can. Please see below for District 6 and citywide updates, and let your friends and neighbors know they can sign up for these newsletters at claycapp.com.
Greenwood Ave Update
We had a great discussion and turnout for the community meeting last week about NDOT’s recommendation to remove the parking on the North side of Greenwood between Scott and Porter. I heard from many others as well (and, please remember: you don’t have to attend a meeting to be heard. Calling/texting/emailing me works too!)
Based on the many collisions and many reports of unsafe conditions on that stretch of Greenwood, I’ve asked NDOT to move forward with its recommendation. The work should happen within the month, or close to it. I will continue to keep an eye on that area to see if other improvements need to be made down the line, and will also work to support the great local businesses at that corner. Please let me know what you’re seeing there too.
It’s Budget Season
The beginning of summer, in Metro, means budget season. Mayor O’Connell has submitted his proposed budget (available here), and now the council will consider it, along with potential amendments, through hearings and work sessions that will last through June. The Metro Council resources page has a lot of useful information about the budget process.
This year’s revenue is about the same as last year’s, but I will be working in particular toward support for public education (including teacher and staff pay and funding locally some strong programs that began during the pandemic with federal funds), and for traffic calming in our neighborhoods.
Please let me know thoughts and ideas about the budget. Also, the council will hold a public hearing on the budget at our next meeting: June 4th, 6:30pm, in the Metro Council Chamber at 1 Public Square.
East Bank, next steps
Now that the Council has approved a lease for the development of the first 30 acres of the East Bank, legislation will accordingly be submitted this summer to modify the zoning of the whole area. As with the lease, I want to hold a community meeting about these zoning changes in advance of their consideration by the council. Even though the East Bank is in District 19, what happens there impacts us particularly on the East Side, and so I want our voices heard here.
As with the lease, D5 CM Sean Parker and I will jointly host this meeting for our two neighboring districts, and D19 CM Jacob Kupin will also be there, as he will be the sponsor of the legislation we are discussing. Thank you to CM Kupin for joining us and hearing from us. The meeting will be held at Warner Elementary School, in the auditorium, on July 9th at 6:00pm. Last time we had a really great and productive discussion, so please join us, or let me know your thoughts!
There will also be a meeting in the evening of June 10th, held in District 19, for a general presentation of the proposal. I will be there, and you are welcome to be there as well. Please keep an eye on my social media channels for exact time and location for this one.
General fun around the District!
This spring, we have been seeing a series of improvements around the district, from a newly installed pavilion at Eastland Park to the new sidewalk being constructed along Ordway. I love these kinds of improvements, and will keep working for them! Please continue letting me know your ideas!
We’ve also had a series of fun and heartening events lately, from the ceremony at Warner Elementary (where the newly-installed bike rack is getting a ton of use!) to recognize next year’s Student Ambassadors, to the groundbreaking for The Lipstick Lounge’s new expansion (a sports bar called Chapstick!) We are lucky to have these institutions in our district, and it is wonderful to see them thriving.
Butterlamp restaurant
As many nearby neighbors know, a restaurant will be opening soon in Eastwood Village, and I will be holding a community meeting to discuss the plans and a potential beer permit. It will be on June 5, at 5:00pm, at the location: 1101 Chapel Avenue, Suite 103. Thank you to the restaurant for hosting us. If you can’t make the meeting, please let me know your thoughts.
As always, please reach out to me directly at [email protected] or 615-864-0008. You can also use Hub Nashville for an array of city services and other Metro requests.
Hope to see you soon. Yours in service, Clay
